USA-1 Ultrasonic Anemometer:USA-1 Ultrasonic Anemometer is a reliable instrument for all weather type operations, has outstanding flexibility and high rated system performance in widespread applications. It has no moving parts, and so avoids shortcomings of the conventional wind sensors, and practically does not need any maintenance. USA1 measures 3 D wind velocity components x, y, z plus, the temperature T derived from the sound velocity. It also comes with Turbulence extension board with internal memory and battery buffered clock for calculating the turbulence data, online.

Benefits of the Ultrasonic Wind Sensor USA-1
Moving parts of conventional wind sensors often cause problems due to the involved mechanics which require considerable effort of continuous maintenance and system check. Furthermore vertical wind components or extremely low or high wind speeds lead to unacceptable deviation from the true wind data. Inertia masses of the sensor contribute to these errors (threshold and over speeding). Since USA-1 was made available commercially in 1992 the system has proven its reliable operation avoiding the problems of conventional sensors. Even the standard sensor USA-1 offers the three wind components in various data set formats including the acoustic derived temperature. The system can be operated in instantaneous or averaging mode with adjustable sample rates and averaging intervals. Extending the standard system with the powerful co-processing board all relevant turbulence variables as variance, covariance, heat and momentum flux,... are calculated on-line and can be integrated easily into further real-time dispersion models via the serial RS232/RS422 interface. The highest system performance level is entered if the analog input channels extension is added to the system. Raw or mean data sets are evaluated in the standard version and with the turbulence processing board even vertical fluxes of external measured quantities are available (e.g. water vapor fluxes, ozone fluxes, ...). Different sensor head configurations and even a separation of sensor head and sensor electronic are offered as options to adapt the system as best as possible to the needs of the customer.

The mini SODAR DSDPA.90-24 is a small powerful acoustic sounder for wind and turbulence profiles in up to 40 height intervals (>5m) within typical height ranges of 15-500 m (nominal max. height >1000m). DSDPA.90-24 offers easy handling and simple set up, high flexibility in operation and well proven analysing techniques.

The SODAR DSDPA.90-64 is a small powerful acoustic sounder for wind and turbulence profiles in up to 48 height intervals (>5m) within typical height ranges of 15-800 m. DSDPA.90-64 offers outstanding reliability for your measurements in view of system availability and system performance in long term unattended routine measurements

482MHz& 1290MHz RASS-Extension Profiling of the virtual temperature (Extension of DSDPA.90-24 or DSDPA.90-64)
Hard- and Software of DSDPA.90-24 and DSDPA.90-64 are prepared to integrate a 1290 or 482 MHz RADAR to build up a MERASS 1000/3000 system for simultaneous measurement of wind, turbulence and temperature.
Extension RASS Subsystem 1290 MHz:
For such RASS system requires an official frequency allocation permit by the national authorities, which must be organized by the customer as the operator of such device. The used frequency 1290 MHz is a frequency band, which is declared as a Class A preference for such meteorological applications.
Extension: RASS Subsystem 482 MHz:
to measure also the temperature profile as high as possible a RASS system based on 482 MHz technique could be considered. Such system has been developed recently by METEK on a contract of the Institute of Tropospheric Research Leipzig, Germany, and was successfully demonstrated on a measuring campaign of the national weather service of Germany in September 2000. This system should be combined with the bigger phase array antenna type DSDPA.90-64 in order to have comparable measuring heights for both profilers.

MRR-2 Micro Rain Radar /Disdrometer:
Micro Rain Radar (MRR2) is useful for vertical profiling of Rain Rate and Liquid Water content by computing complete drop size distribution. This offers high quality measurements free of wind effects, sea spray and surroundings. The main features of MRR are very low maintenance efforts, high system reliability and lower power consumption (24 VDC, 15 W) which makes this equipment suitable for any typical field conditions. The measuring principle is based on the relation between drop size and scattering cross section and between drop size and fall velocity.
Preferred Applications:

  • Drop size Distribution Measurement (Disdrometer) & Monitoring of the melting layer
  • Calibration of weather radar signals, Nowcasting of precipitation events
  • Research (hydrology, precipitation, cloud physics), Rain measurements at wind exposed sites e.g. on ships or offshore platforms

MIRA36 Cloud Radar:

MIRA36 is a magnetron based pulsed Ka-Band Doppler radar for unattended long term observation of atmospheric clouds. In its standard configuration MIRA36 linear polarized signal are transmitted while co and cross polarized signals are received simultaneously to detect Doppler spectra of the reflectivity & Linear De-polarization Ratio (LDR). The reflectivity is used to determine the density of cloud constituents while LDR helps to identify the target type.
